Do your pets and your landscape seem incompatible? It’s not that hard to create a more pet-friendly landscape.

Choose only non-toxic species for your plantings. Poisonous plants include oleander, coontie, coral bean, and certain weeds like nightshade. Also, remove mushrooms from the landscape, as they may be toxic.

It’s best to keep your cat inside, but if you let her out, get rid of birdbaths and bird feeders to avoid tragedies.

Leave some open areas so your dog has room to run. And make sure there’s plenty of shade and a clean source of water for when he’s tired and hot.

As you plan your landscape, don’t forget about your pets!

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
