Raccoons are opportunistic animals that are common in urban landscapes.

They’re nocturnal and can be quite bold. They can sometimes get into garbage cans and even eat fruits and vegetables out of the garden!

To reduce the attraction raccoons have for your landscape, don’t leave pet food outside and make sure there is no access to the chimney or underside of your house.

To protect edibles, an electric fence may be the only solution. Repellents and noisemaking devices have limited, if any, effectiveness.

If a raccoon is becoming aggressive or is appearing during the day and showing signs of neurological abnormalities, contact your local animal control service to check for treatment options.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
