Whether you’re planning a new landscape or just doing some landscape troubleshooting, consider getting your soil tested.

A soil test tells you what nutrients your soil contains, as well as its pH, that is, whether it’s too acid or too alkaline, which in turn affects how plants get nutrients from the soil.

You can take a soil sample from a small area, like a flower bed, or combine multiple samples from a large area, like a lawn.

A soil sample kit, which you can get from your county Extension office or from the IFAS Extension soil testing laboratory, will come with detailed sampling instructions and where to send your sample.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
