St. Augustinegrass is the most widely planted lawn grass in Florida and is one of the few types that has some shade tolerance. It’s easy to establish from sod or plugs.

St. Augustinegrass like most grasses requires water to stay green during periods of drought but it can suffer from pests and diseases if over or under watered. Calibrate your irrigation system to deliver only as much water as the grass needs and water less during cool months.

If you fertilize follow UF/IFAS recommendations for application rates and be aware of any local fertilizer restrictions.

If your grass shows signs of stress, disease, or pests, make sure you know what is causing the problem before beginning treatment.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
