- Water your lawn only when it needs it. Footprints will stay in the lawn, leaf blades will fold in half, and the lawn will take on a blue-green hue.
- Water your landscape plants only when they need it. Some plants are prone to wilting when they need water.
- Use a rain gauge to see how much water your plants get naturally.
- Grouping plants with similar water needs will make it easier to give your plants the correct amount of water.
- Water less in cooler months when turfgrass grass is dormant.
- Water in the early morning to prevent water from sitting on the foliage overnight.
- Follow all local watering restrictions as to when you can water.
- Turfgrass and landscape plants are irrigated only as needed according to UF/IFAS recommendations and in compliance with any existing watering restrictions
- Calibrate your irrigation system to apply 1/2” to 3/4” of water per application.
- Maintain your irrigation system seasonally to adjust spray patterns and repair clogs and leaks.
Types of irrigation/ controllers
- Make sure your functioning in-ground irrigation systems has an automatic rainfall shutoff device or soil moisture sensor that is maintained.It is the law (FS 373.662).
- Make sure that not more than 50% of the irrigation system (by area) is high-volume.
- Install and maintain low-flow or microirrigation in plant beds.
- Install spray and rotor heads on separate zones.
- Use a smart controller (evapotranspiration, soil moisture sensor, or similar).
