Mulch Guidance
What to Use
Use FFL recommended mulch:
Pine bark
Pine straw
Fallen leaves
Melaleuca mulch
Mixed hardwood mulch
Eucalyptus mulch
Utility mulch
Use alternative, by-products or recycled mulches when available.
Do not use cypress mulch. It may be harvested unsustainably.
How to Mulch
Create self-mulching areas under trees
Self-mulching areas exist under trees where leaves can remain as they fall.
FFL recommended mulch is applied at a depth of 2-3".
Replenish mulch as needed to maintain a 2-3” depth.
Avoid “volcano mulching” where mulch is piled against the tree trunk.
Keep mulch away (12”-18”) from the base of trees. If needed for aesthetic reasons, put no more than one inch over the rootball.
Keep mulch away (1”-2”) from shrubs.
