With its beautiful orange or yellow flowers, and its thick glossy leaves, clivia is a favorite tropical bulb for use in a shaded area.
Native to South Africa and related to the amaryllis, clivia has thick, sponge-like roots that are semi-epiphytic, meaning they need to be exposed to the air to survive.
The best way to grow clivia is to plant it in a pot using a coarse, well-drained medium, like an orchid mix. To help it bloom, keep your clivia in a cool, shady spot and allow it to dry out over the winter. Once mature, your clivia will be a large, robust plant two to three feet tall. Just be sure to bring them indoors or protect them from frost and freezes.
