Pruning is an essential chore in any landscape. But using the right tools can make it much easier.

Hand pruning shears are good for small branches. If you attempt to cut a larger branch with these shears, you risk ruining the shears and harming the plant.

Lopping shears have longer handles and are operated with both hands. Good quality loppers can slice through branches one-and-a-half inches thick. Larger branches will require a saw.

Pole pruners allow you to reach small branches high in trees. Electric, gas engine, and rope-operated pole pruners are available.

Hedge shears can be manual or power, and are useful when pruning small-leaved plants into formal shapes.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
