Episode #163 | Original Air Date: October 14, 2020
Forget fall leaf displays. Here in Florida, fall is when the sasanqua camellias put on their own show.
These large, cold-hardy shrubs bloom each fall with flowers that are white, pink, red, or variegated. They produce so many flowers, that the ground below becomes carpeted with petals.
Sasanqua camellias typically have smaller flowers and leaves than Japonica camellias which flower in the winter and spring.
Plant your sasanqua camellia in a spot where it’ll receive partial to full shade. Water it on a regular basis until it’s established. After that, it’ll have good drought tolerance.
Camellia’s dark, evergreen leaves also make a good backdrop for other plants.
