Epiphytes are plants, like many bromeliads and orchids, that cling to rocks or other plants for support, although, unlike parasitic plants, they do not harm their hosts.

Also unlike parasitic plants, epiphytes get everything they need from the sun, moisture in the air, and organic matter that falls their way, making them an ideal Florida Friendly Landscaping accent for the patio or porch.

Some ferns, algae, and lichens are also epiphytic and may live high in the tree canopy or on the trunk of a tree. Many are also found in the shady lower branches.

For your backyard landscape try growing them on slabs of bark fiber from the local garden center.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
