For centuries, gardeners have selected seeds from their best-tasting, best-performing vegetables to use for future planting. Those seeds, now passed down for many generations, give us our modern-day heirloom vegetables and a living link to the past.

Many gardeners prefer heirlooms for their flavor and visual appeal. Others feel that the shrinking gene pools from increased hybridization can leave plants vulnerable to disease and pests and want to preserve genetic diversity.

Heirloom varieties that have been cultivated for many years in a particular region are well-suited to that area’s soil and climate.

So, try growing some of these old favorites today!
