Holly ferns are great drought-tolerant choices for the shady Florida garden.

Holly ferns form loose two to three-foot tall clumps of deep green feathery leaves. The leaves have pointy edges that give it a holly-like appearance.

They can be used in part sun to fully shady spots as a border plant, ground cover, or in a woodland garden.

It makes an excellent understory plant beneath large shrubs which have had their lower branches removed.

In North and Central Florida, fronds may be damaged by cold weather. Cut them back before new spring growth begins.

Buy several and plant them in broad sweeps or cover the ground underneath a shady tree.
