‘Tis the season for evergreen trees, wreaths, and, of course, Christmas cactus, which provides lovely bright blooms during the holiday season.

Christmas cacti naturally form flower buds as the days shorten in fall and winter. To ensure that your Christmas cactus blooms for the holidays, don’t let it get any artificial light after dark starting at the beginning of October.

During the day, locate your plant in an area that receives bright indirect light.

Repot your Christmas cactus once every year in a well-drained potting medium and be sure to allow the upper inch of soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.

Let a Christmas cactus brighten your holiday this winter!

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
