Composting in a compost bin encourages the break-down of organic materials that you can use in your yard to enhance your soil.

The style of bin that is right for you depends on available space and how much compostable material you generate. There are many types of bins available at garden centers and online, or you can build one yourself.

Homemade bins can be constructed out of wire fence, wood, masonry or even recycled pallets. Purchased units are often made of plastic and some are designed in a barrel fashion to allow the contents to be turned.

Composting is an easy way to reduce the amount of waste you send to the landfill.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
