Spreading a 3-inch-deep layer of mulch in your landscape beds is a Florida-Friendly way to control weeds and save water. But how do you know how much mulch to buy?

Garden centers typically sell mulch in bags that hold two or three cubic feet, but bulk deliveries trucked to your house are measured in cubic yards. For a quick rule of thumb, each cubic foot of mulch will cover 4 square feet of your landscape, while a cubic yard will cover 108 square feet.

Measure your landscape’s length and width to estimate its square footage and convert that to the number of bags or cubic yards of mulch you will need. It's that easy.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
