Stepping stones are an easy option for creating pathways in the landscape. Because they cover less ground than an asphalt or concrete sidewalk, rainwater infiltrates more easily, which reduces runoff. Stepping stones also keep damaging foot traffic off turfgrass and groundcovers.

There are several material options for stepping stones. Natural stones or flagstones blend well in the landscape, while concrete stones are available in different shapes and colors.

For a personal touch, you can even create your own stepping stones. These make a thoughtful gift and are great projects for kids.

Plan your pathway before laying the stones and make sure they’re level and have space between them to allow water infiltration.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
