Trees are a major asset to your property but can be damaged by construction projects. So, consult with your contractor before beginning construction and create a plan for preserving your trees.

Root damage is the biggest danger from construction. Avoid anything that compacts the soil, changes soil level, or digs into the root zone. When digging to install utility lines, make sure to go around, or under, the tree roots.

Construct a barrier fence outside the dripline of the tree to keep vehicles, construction materials, and foot traffic from compacting the soil. The fence will also protect the branches and trunk from injury.

Remember when building to safeguard the trees!

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
