Needle palm is a small, slow-growing native plant that can work well in home landscapes throughout Florida. Its lustrous, evergreen leaves can reach up to eight feet tall and wide. Needle palms are native to coastal areas of the Southeast.

Its common name comes from the sharp 4-10” black needles found along its trunk. Needle palms are often listed as the most cold hardy palm and can take temperatures down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Needle palms perform best if given some shade and they can tolerate a wide range of soils. They are endangered in the wild, so take care to buy only from reputable dealers who raise the plants in a nursery setting.
