Your home irrigation should have a rain sensor or other shutoff device that keeps you from watering your lawn if it has already getting enough rain. If you have a sensor, you will need to test it a few times a year to make sure it’s working properly.

On a rainy day when it has already rained a half inch or more, set your rain sensor at one-half inch and try to manually turn on your irrigation system. If your rain sensor is working, then the irrigation system should not come on.

If the irrigation system does run, check your sensor for loose wires, or if it needs cleaning or adjusting, or even replaced.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
