Dividing perennials is an easy and inexpensive way to gain additional plants for your garden or to share with your fellow gardeners.

Dividing and replanting also helps keep rapidly spreading perennials under control, as well as reinvigorating old plants, keeping them actively growing and blooming freely.

To divide a perennial, simply dig up the plants and shake off the soil. It will be apparent where to separate the plants into smaller units, each having roots and leaves.

The best time to divide perennials is after blooming or during mild seasons. Perennials that have frozen to the ground can be lifted, divided, and reset for renewed life at the onset of spring.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
