We all know that summers in Florida are hot, but did you know that your landscape can affect the temperatures inside your home? With careful planning and design, you can create an energy-saving landscape.

Determine which walls and windows get the most light. Plant trees that will create shade to lower indoor temperatures reducing the cost to keep your house cool in the summer.

Small or medium-sized trees work best for shading the walls of your house. Trees that get more than thirty feet tall should be planted farther from the house, to prevent damage from downed limbs.

Remember, smart choices now translate into savings down the road!

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
