Blackberries are native to Florida, but improved varieties are grown for their larger, sweeter fruit.

Blackberries are usually divided into two categories, trailing and erect. Trailing blackberries require trellising. There are also some thornless varieties that do well in the northern part of the state.

Place your blackberries in a full sun location near a water source. Blackberries prefer deep, well-drained, and slightly acidic soils. Because they often benefit from cross-pollination, it’s best to plant more than one cultivar together.

Your blackberries will typically bloom in February or March, and the picking season can range from April through June.

Pick your blackberries at least once a week.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ in a Minute is a production of the University of Florida’s Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program, IFAS Extension, and WUFT-FM in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
