    Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program

Thanks for your interest in making your landscape Florida-Friendly!

Our experts have developed a variety of resources to guide you. Whether you need advice on selecting Florida-Friendly plants, conserving water, reducing pollution, or any other aspect of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™, we've got you covered.

    The 9 Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™

     1. Right Plant Right Place
     2. Water Efficiently
     3. Fertilize Appropriately
     4. Mulch
     5. Attract Wildlife
     6. Manage Yard Pests Responsibly
     7. Recycle Yard Waste
     8. Reduce Stormwater Runoff
     9. Protect the Waterfront

    First Step Ideas

Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

    • Identify Your Plants: Knowing what plants are in your landscape is the first step for knowing how to care for them!
    • Use the FFL Plant Guide app to help you select Florida-Friendly plants that will thrive in your yard.
    • Check the UF/IFAS assessment list and remove plants identified as invasive.
    • Conserve Water: If you use an irrigation system, turn it off. Only irrigate when your landscape shows signs of drought stress.
    • Add Mulch: A 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch makes a difference! Mulch retains soil moisture while suppressing weeds. Select a Florida-Friendly mulch such as pine, melaleuca, or eucalyptus.
